World Triathlon announce 2021 Hamburg WTCS rearranged for 18 September

The German city of Hamburg have rescheduled the third leg of the World Triathlon Championship Series to the 18/19 September following the local race organisers and DTU [German Triathlon Federation] working with the City of Hamburg and other stakeholder to secure a new race date. This date rescheduling was due to the postponement of the race back in July with World Triathlon specifying the reason as “ongoing restrictions related with the pandemic”.

As the 2021 World Triathlon Championship Finals Edmonton, take place before the Hamburg race this means that Hamburg becomes the first World Triathlon Championship Series race counting towards the 2022 World Championship titles. The same points situation will apply to the 2021 World Triathlon Championship Series Bermuda event (taking place with Sprint & Mixed Relay World Championships on 16-17 October) and the World Triathlon Championship Series Abu Dhabi on 5-6 November. World Triathlon will announce the complete calendar for the 2022 season later in the year.

The race will be open to elite and age-group athletes. Martin Engelhardt, President of the Deutschland Triathlon Union, said: “The Hamburg Wasser World Triathlon has a very special significance for Triathlon Germany. Therefore, I am very happy that a new date could now be found” and goes on to say that he was “especially happy for the many age group athletes who will get the opportunity to compete themselves this year after all.”

Let us hope that the restriction entry into Germany is lifted by then and UK competitors can once again enter Germanys travel corridor. However, the German chancellors recent call on other EU states to force vaccinated arrivals from the UK to isolate over delta variant fears does not appear to bode well for a stress-free event.
