World Duathlon Championship 2021 moved to different country

The World Duathlon Championship has been moved to a different location in a different country. The Championship will now take place in the historic Spanish town of Aviles on November 6-7, 2021. Aviles will also play host not only to the elite, U23 and Junior races, but also to the Age-Group Duathlon World Championships.

This event was to take place at the World Triathlon Multi-sport Championships in Almere-Amsterdam in September. While this event is still happening for the long-distance triathlon and aqua-bike championships it’s just not so ‘Multi’ , as the duathlon, cross and aquathlon events were all cancelled due the covid restrictions in the Netherlands.

World Triathlon worked on finding an alternative location for the event by evaluating all possible new venue options. And what better place than Aviles for World Triathlon to announce as the new venue. Aviles was host to the Duathlon World Championships in 2016. This will be the sixth time a Duathlon World Championship will be held in Spain and Avilés will be the second venue to receive it twice, a privilege that was held by Galician city of Pontevedra.

The Spanish town of Avilés in the north-western province of Asturias, is steeped in history and architectural gems. The scenic city of Avilés is stylish and easy to navigate, with plenty of high street stores, pretty cafes and several museums and galleries to visit, while the Old Town quarter is Aviles’ finest feature which consists of several historic squares and plazas, interlinked by a series of pretty boulevards from centuries past.

If this Championship takes on the same course as Aviles 2016 Championships then spectators will be in for a feast as the cycle course was two and half laps leading through the town three times for the benefit of the spectators, two laps and one-half lap back into transition. The run course adopted a similar spectator friendly route taking you back over the blue carpet twice over the two laps of 5km for the first run and two laps of 2.5km for the second.

The event will be run under strict COVD guidelines approved by the Spanish Federation and World Triathlon, and more details of the calendar, distances and registration process will be announced in the next weeks.
