The perfect fuel to ‘Battle’ your way through a triathlon?

It doesn’t matter how good an athlete you are or what results you have, there is no denying that if you do not fuel yourself sufficiently you are going to cause detriment to your training and racing. The newly launched performance nutrition range from Battle Ready Fuel is a supplement that could fit perfectly into your training to allow you to maximise your performance.

The newly released range has a total of nine great tasting supplements and snacks and TriNation had a chance to test and review two of them, the Military Whey and Multi-Layered Protein Bites.

This scientifically backed and clinically proven range was founded by Ollie Ollerton (former UK Special Forces and face of SAS: Who Dares Wins) who claims this is your one-stop shop to prepare, perform and recover at the highest level.

Our test:

Multi-Layered Protein Bites

Tested over a two of weekends of training, this part will ring true to your ears. A long four hour Sunday ride, and something I have learnt over many years, is that it is crucial for me to eat no later than one hour into a ride or risk forcing my body to play catch up to avoid ‘the bonk’ when trying to fuel myself at a later stage.

The clues are in the name ‘Multi Layered’ and ‘Bites’. I’ll start with the later. There is nothing more difficult than trying to open a wrapper and eating a bar when moving at a speed of over 25kmph, whilst trying to balance your bike. This product perfectly combats this problem by dividing the bar into halves. This allows you to simply take a whole piece at a time and then put the other half away with ease to eat at a later stage.

The bar is multilayered and looks similar to a mars bar. With a lot of bars you can face the crumble effect when taking a bite, but this bar seems to avoid this problem. It has a flakey like texture but is also soft so crumbles easily in the mouth avoiding any mess. The overall taste is good but the flavour is not particularly strong – we were sent the strawberry flavour.

Are there any downsides?

Nothing stands out particularly, but if being picky, the one thing that did pop up that may not take your fancy is how long it took to consume. This fuel is on the chewier side and if you are someone that likes to have a supplement that you can swig down swiftly, then this is not for you, however, if you are someone who likes to fill their stomach, then this would be ideal.

The Battle Ready Fuel Protein Bars come in a box of 12 at a cost of RRP £24.99.

Military Whey

After harder training sessions everyone needs that quick go-to supplement that will help you get rid of that temptation to eat absolutely anything, especially sugary food. I found that the Military Whey is the perfect quick fix that will allow you to recover at a quick rate and not go hungry before you make it to breakfast, lunch or dinner.

As triathletes a complete protein source is something we all need in our diet. During a workout, we put our muscles through a lot of stress and in order for you to gain the full benefit, your muscles need protein in the aftermath. With 23.17g of protein per scoop and 117kcal per serving, the formula contains five active digestive enzymes to help you refuel efficiently post-workout.

In terms of taste, again, similar to the Bites, the flavour is not strong, but I personally see this as a good thing. Many protein shakes out there can seem overpowering, whereas this one sits just right.

The Battle Ready Fuel Military whey comes at a cost of RRP £24.99 / 450g
