Team GB’s Olympic Gold Medallists to race Super League Triathlon London

Super League Triathlon’s 2021 Championship Series launches into motion on Sunday 5th September as London plays host to the best triathletes in the world which includes Team GB’s four winning Olympic relay gold medallists.

The British quartet of Georgia Taylor-Brown, Jessica Learmonth, Alex Yee and Jonathan Brownlee will all be lining up to race individually for the first leg of the Championship Series to be held in British capital London on September 5.  West India Quay, down in the Docklands is the location for the race, providing a stunning backdrop for the stars of swim-bike-run to take on Super League’s amazing formats outdoors for the first time in almost two years.

This year’s championship events will all be held in back-to-back races in the month of September. The London event will be followed by Munich in Germany on September 12, Jersey – the largest of the Channel Islands – on September 18 and Malibu in the US on September 25.

World Champions Katie Zaferes (USA) and Vincent Luis (FRA) have been the dominate force in Super League to-date. Both are definitely capable of winning again but the gap in that winning margin has been closed with up-and-coming talent like Taylor Spivey and Maya Kingma and also Alex Yee and Hayden Wilde.  When you’re at the top that is the most difficult thing – staying there.

There is plenty more British interest in the race with Beth Potter and Sophie Coldwell both Arena Games winners, Vicky Holland and Non Stanford make up the large contingent of British Women entrants whilst 2018 European Champion Gordon Benson will be starting in the men’s event.

The race will be a Triple Mix format which will see the athletes race three times, in three different racing formats:

Race One – Swim, Bike, Run

Race Two – Run, Bike, Swim

Race Three – Bike, Swim, Run

With each race distance being 300m swim (one lap), 4km bike (four laps) and 1.6km run (two laps).

Much like the PTO’s Long Distance Collins Cup, Super League Triathlon (SLT) has also added a team franchise system for the 2021 Championship Series, to be also held on four successive weekends in September.

The new system, which SLT says has been inspired by sports such as cycling and Formula One, will bring a $320,000 (£233,190/€272,140) increase in prize money, taking the total pool to $1.25 million (£911,100/€1.06 million), with every athlete now guaranteed earnings from the league.

Each member of the winning team will earn $15,000 (£10,930/€12,770).

There are five Teams, each with a Team Manager who has a vast knowledge of the sport. The SLT Teams are:

SLT Scorpions: Managed by four-time World Champion Chris McCormack
SLT Eagles: Managed by four-time World Champion Tim Don
SLT Cheetahs: Managed by World Duathlon champion Annie Emerson
SLT Rhinos: Managed by 11-time Ironman winner Ronnie Schildknecht
SLT Sharks: Managed by two-time Olympian Michelle Dillon

Each team will consist of four female athletes and four male athletes.

We will bring you more on the 5 team events once it has embedded itself after the first race.
