Team England athletes selected for Home Commonwealth Games in Birmingham
The initial selections have been made by Team England for the upcoming Commonwealth Games as they prepare to put on a show on home turf in Birmingham this year.
The selections to date are as follows:
- Alex Yee – Olympic gold and silver medallist.
- Georgia Taylor-Brown – Olympic gold and Silver Medalist.
- Jonny Brownlee – Olympic gold mixed relay winner and 2014 Commonwealth Games Gold and Silver Medalist.
- Sophie Coldwell – Represented Team England at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Triathlon will be the first medal event on the programme at Birmingham 2022, taking place at Sutton Park.
Gerogia Taylor-Brown commented on her selection: “When I watched the London Olympics and how the crowd really got behind everyone, I thought it was quite sad that that may never happen again in my lifetime, so to be able to be at a home Games for the Commonwealth Games is quite incredible and something you’ll cherish and relish in as the crowds will really get behind you.”
Alex Yee, who will be making his debut at the Commonwealth Games said: “I’m delighted to be selected. Birmingham was always a target of mine, and I can’t wait to compete in a major championship at home. I know the crowd will be brilliant and give us a real advantage.”
The team will hope to rekindle its individual gold success from 2014 when Team England’s Jodie Stimpson stormed to gold in Glasgow 2014. With Team England already selecting three out of the four Tokyo 2020 relay medal winners, they are already well positioned on that front.
Team England’s Chef de Mission, Mark England OBE, welcomed the athletes to the team: “It’s brilliant to announce Team England’s first four athletes for Birmingham 2022 all of whom are world leading triathletes, and really exciting to be medal competitive from day one. A home Games is a truly special event to be involved in and I’d like to congratulate the athletes on their selection.”
