Sunderland earmarked to host a 2023 World Triathlon Championship Series event

Sunderland is earmarked to host a 2023 World Triathlon Championship Series event as the ‘City of Surprises’ prepares to host two major events over the next two years.

Firstly, Sunderland will host the 2022 British Triathlon Grand Final for the first time in August 2022 which will see the best British domestic athletes go head-to-head as part of a wider partnership between British Triathlon and Sunderland City Council.

A year later, the city will prepare to host the world’s best triathletes during a leg of the prestigious 2023 World Triathlon Championship Series which sees the world’s best travel to iconic cities around the world such as Abu Dhabi and Yokohama.

The events will take place on the iconic seafront of Sunderland following an ongoing £5m rolling programme of seafront restoration that has already seen Sunderland win a national award for its featured seafront lighting as well as the complete transformation of the much-loved landmark, the Grade 11 Roker Pier Lighthouse. The Sunderland coast around Roker and Seaburn will make a great North East base for the world of triathlon.

Taking place over the weekend of 20 and 21 August 2022, the British Triathlon Grand Final will bring together athletes from the Youth & Junior, Senior and Paratri British Triathlon Super Series for an action-packed weekend of racing, which will also see Sunderland host the 2022 Inter Regional Championships on the same weekend.

The partnership being actioned by British Triathlon and Sunderland City Council will facilitate opportunities for more people to take up swimming, cycling and running in the city through the platform of major triathlon events.
