Scotland’s Gyms and Pools set to reopen by 14 September

It was announced in the Scottish Parliament today (30 July)  that gyms and public swimming pools could potentially reopen fully to the public on September 14, 2020.

In today’s coronavirus briefing, Scotlands First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon informed the date of 14 September was indicative only and would be reviewed in three weeks to see if the date could be brought forward to late August, with the adage that leisure centres “require a particularly cautious approach” so this date is very much potentially subject to change.

Whilst this is extremely welcome news to all Scottish recreational users and athletes alike, leisure industry leaders still remain baffled why Sturgeon has not allowed them to open from the start of August, particularly in the light that many European countries gyms and pools have been open for weeks and they are not aware of any incidents, transmissions or infection at sites. Prior to today’s briefing, Duncan Bannatyne, who has 11 health clubs in Scotland, has already warned that 600 job could be at risk if Scotland did not allow gyms to open in August.

Dr Liz Cameron, chief executive of the Scottish Chambers of Commerce, said it was “imperative” that gyms had a “clear and earlier date of return…Further delays may result in permanent job losses and business closures,”

A piece of welcome news from today’s briefing was the announcement that from Monday 3 August,  Sports Coaches will be able to meet with groups of more than four households at a time. No updated guidance was given for larger gatherings such as mass start triathlon events.
