Olympic Mixed Triathlon Team Relay – Can they do it?

Great Britain are in the Box-Seat to win the first-ever Olympic Mixed Triathlon Team Relay and to make it three medals in a row following Alex Yee’s and Georgina Taylor-Brown magnificent silver medal performances in their respective individual races.

It’s a British team that now has four Olympic medals between the four of them, with Georgia Taylor-Brown and Alex Yee being joined by Jessica Learmonth, who’s currently ranked number five in the world and is one of the best swim-bikers in the sport, and Jonny Brownlee, who is looking for his third Olympic medal and first gold. And the fifth member to call upon –if GB opt to do so – is Vicky Holland a 2-time World Mixed Team Champion and the 2018 WTCS champion.

Great Britain’s biggest competitors will likely be France and the USA.

The French team were the favourites pre-Olympics having topped the World Mixed Relay ranking in 2019 and having secured three consecutive world titles in the event. The French team look formidable on paper with the likes of World Champion Vincent Luis but the French athletes were lacking in form in their individual events.

The Americans on paper have the terrifically strong team of athletes both in their men and women with Katie Zaferes  showing some of her old 2019 dominant form taking Bronze in her individual event. But the teams overall individual performances were indifferent.

So, if all goes down to the wire and its down to who can run the fastest who’s your money on Vincent Luis (FRA), Morgan Pearson (USA) or will Alex Yee (GB) solo his way to a Gold for Team GB.

Nonetheless, this race is fast and furious and there is no room for slip ups. If any of these three nations teams get it wrong then Australia, Belgium, and New Zealand will all have a great shot at a medal

The Mixed Relay starts at 11:30pm BST this coming Friday, 30 July (6:30am local time, Saturday 31 July). Viewers in the UK can watch it live on the BBC.
