Dickinson secures bronze medal at 2022 Europe Triathlon Cup Coimbra 

Sam Dickinson secured the bronze medal in the men’s 2022 Europe Triathlon Cup Coimbra in Portugal on Saturday 11th June. 

Coimbra, is a riverfront city in central Portugal and the country’s former capital, is home to a preserved medieval old town, a perfect setting for the Sprint race to take place.

Dickinson secured the highest placing of the British quartet who entered the race with the Harry Leleu and Sam Hart finishing in a formidable 15th and 16th place in a huge competitive field of 62 athletes. The fourth athlete Jimmy Lund withdrew and did not finish. 

Establishing himself within a front group heading into the final transition, Dickinson just had to remain steady on the last of the three disciplines, the 5km run, to guarantee a podium spot. Clocking a respectable time of 00:50:34 the British athlete crossed the finishing line less than 12 seconds adrift of Portuguese Olympian Joao Pereira winning time of 00:50:23 who took gold with France’s Boris Pierre taking home the silver medal and Dickinson securing the bronze medal. 

Overall, it was another good experience for the British boys and the results are really encouraging for the start of this season. 

In the women’s race there were two young starlets in Sophia Green and Iona Miller from the highlands and lowlands of Scotland representing Great Britain. Sophia Green the winner at this event last year has just been selected to represent Team Scotland Triathlon at the Commonwealth whereas Iona Miller has been selected as the women’s reserve.  

There was to be no repeat of Sophia winning ways of last year that reward this year went to Mathilde Gautier of France who took the victory in a time of 00:55:45 With the American Lydia Russell taking second place and third spot going to Sofía Aguayo Mauri of Spain. 

The two Brits, nonetheless put up valiant displays with Sophie Green finishing in 15th place just a minute behind the winning time and 19th place for Iona Miller in a large field of 47 of Europe’s top elite athletes
