Beth Potter becomes first-ever eSports Triathlon World Champion
Scotland’s Beth Potter became the first-ever eSports Triathlon World Champion at the Arena Games Triathlon Grand Final in Singapore.
In the unique final contest that saw 10 world-class field women competitors go head-to-head over three stages combining swim stages in a pool plus virtual indoor bike and run stages powered by Zwift, Beth Potter lay claim to the first-ever eSports Triathlon World Championships .
A strong British presence was on display in the Grand Final race with four main contenders of Jess Learmonth, Georgia Taylor-Brown, Sian Rainsley and Beth Potter all reaching the final through the heat stages.
The final race saw 10 athletes line up for an outdoor swim at Marina Bay Reservoir with the bike and run sections taking place outside in the heat and humidity of Singapore.
The final remained very unpredictable with eight of the ten athletes all in contention to win the world championships. In the first stage of the finals three mini triathlons Jess Learmonth was looking invincible but had to pull up on the treadmill with a hip injury.
In the final stage of the Grand Final it was the Hungarian Zsanett Bragmayer who reaped the rewards producing a classy display to win the race having got to the final through the repechage, having not won her heats.
It all came down to a final 1km run showdown between Potter and Bragmayer with the German pipping Potter at the virtual finish line to take the win. Georgia Taylor-Brown took third third place with Sian Rainsley coming in fourth..
Second place for Potter was all that was required for her to become first-ever eSports Triathlon World Champion having come first in Munich, and second in London.
