Portugal steps in to host the 2021 World Triathlon Junior Championships
Quarteira in Portugal has been chosen as the new venue for this year’s World Triathlon Junior Championships which is also hosting a Europe Triathlon Cup on the same weekend.
The 2021 World Triathlon Junior Championships was planned to run concurrently with the World Triathlon Sprint & Relay Championships in Bermuda on October 15-17, but cancelled due to the global pandemic.
The Executive Board of World Triathlon decided to reschedule the event and Federacao de Triatlo de Portugal, local authorities and Europe Triathlon stepped in at short notice to arrange for the championships to be held in Quarteria during the week-end of November 6-7
World Triathlon President and IOC member, Marisol Casado stated “We really want to thank the Portuguese National Federation, the local organising committee and Europe Triathlon for their willingness to step up and add the Junior World Championships to the programme of Quarteira”.
Marisol Casado further explained “With the Juniors already having missed their World Championships last year due to the pandemic, it was very important for us to give them the opportunity to compete this year so that the athletes will have at least one chance of competing at the highest level before moving out of this age group”.
World Triathlon worked on finding an alternative location for the event by evaluating all possible new venue options. And what better place than Quarteria for World Triathlon to announce as the new venue having hosted Europe Triathlon Junior Cup events multiple times.
Quarteira’s beaches are some of the most popular in the Algarve and are loved by both Portuguese and international tourists. Quarteira beach extends from Vale de Lobo along the Quarteira town section of the beach where there is a pleasant beachfront promenade to the west of the fishing harbour where you can find another the sandy beach, Praia de Vilamoura, which leads to Vilamoura’s famous marina.
