2022 Commonwealth Games: Triathlon Site Plan Submitted
Key details on how the 2022 Commonwealth Games Triathlon will be staged in Birmingham have been revealed as a detailed planning application has been submitted for the use of Sutton Park to host the triathlon events at next summer’s sporting showcase.
The proposals from the Birmingham 2022 Organising Committee are set to go before Birmingham City Council planning committee next week on Thursday August 19th.
The Park in Sutton Coldfield is planned to be used for the Games in July and August next year, with structures erected in June/July and dismantled by the end of August.
Included in the plans are a 2,000-capacity spectator area which would seat 500 and be up to 7.5 metres in height. The area to be used to stage the triathlon is located north of Powell’s Pool.
There are also plans for catering units and toilets, the field of play, a temporary pontoon on the Powell’s Pool, vehicle and pedestrian access areas and spectator arrival points.
There would also be a broadcast compound, media centre and TV camera locations, a preparation area for athletes and security fencing with a maximum height 2.1 metres.
The structures are temporary in nature and safeguarding conditions ensure that the site would be returned to its current condition post event and that no long-lasting adverse impacts would occur.
In keeping with the Games carbon neutral theme a planning officer stated “It is proposed that vehicular access to the site would not provide parking for workforce or spectators and that 70 per cent of the trips will be by public transport or active transport.
The proposals indicate that the Triathlon events would have significant short and long term positive economic and social benefits in accordance with local and national planning policy.
The planning committee held on Thursday August 19th from 11:00 am can be viewed on the city council’s committee meetings YouTube page here:
