There is nothin’ like a Dame – Duffy and Springman awarded in New Year Honours
Bermuda’s Flora Duffy and Professor Sarah Springman (one of TriNations ‘Legends of Triathlon’) were each awarded a Damehood in the Queen’s New Year Honours List 2022.
‘There is nothin’ like a Dame; was the song title in a smash Broadway musical and it is certainly true of these two pioneering female leaders. Damehoods are bestowed on people who have made a major contribution at national level and both Duffy and Springman have done this in abundance.
Having risen to the ranks of Dame Commanders can these two female pioneers of triathlon get anymore commanding – I think we can expect them to forge more success and contribution to the sport in the years to come.
Flora Duffy was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire (OBE) for her services to Sport in Bermuda having become her country’s first ever Olympic Champion in Tokyo last July before going on to secure a record-equalling third women’s world title in Edmonton.
Professor Sarah Springman was made a Dame Commander of the British Empire (DBE) for services to Engineering and to International Sports Administration as a former elite triathlete who served as vice-president of the International Triathlon Union twice and president of British Triathlon. In February she will become principal of St Hilda’s College, Oxford.
