Spaniard Bellido becomes 2021 World Triathlon Junior Champion
Spain’s Igor (Bellido) Mikhailova is the 2021 World Triathlon Junior Champion winning the Sprint Championship race in Quarteria, Portugal this Saturday Nov 6th.
The Spaniard Bellido ran solo for 5km all the way to the winning tape after an eventful bike segment in Quarteira. Joao Batista of Portugal took silver to send the home crowd wild whilst Britains Dominic Coy (GBR) took home the bronze.
The Spaniard Bellido entered the world of triathlon at the age of eleven because he was diagnosed with lumbar scoliosis, (curvature of the spine) and was recommended to manage the symptom with swimming, But swimming did not attract Bellido, so his father signed him to up to a triathlon club near Seville, his home city. From that moment on there has been no looking back for the young Spaniard.
Today’s win leaps Bellido one step closer to his dream of playing a part in the World Triathlon Series and the Olympics by following in the footsteps of Spain’s three times world champions Mario Mola who became Triathlon Junior World Champion 2009
Bellido has a terrific season this year having in recent months taking top podium spots and gold medals at the European Junior Cup, Sliver Lakes, Serbia and European Junior Cup, Wels Austria which culminated in representing Team Spain at the WTCS Hamburg Mixed Relay in September where Spain finished in 10th place.
