Round the world cyclist Josh Quigley in second life-threatening bike crash
Scottish cyclist Josh Quigley is recovering from his second serious crash in little over a year.
Quigley 28, from Livingstone is in hospital awaiting surgery for suspected multiple fractures of the spine, pelvis, shoulder, collarbone and elbow after falling off his bike at 40mph while training in Dubai on Tuesday.
This is the second life-threatening accident since being hit by a vehicle in Texas during a round-the-world-trip in December 2019. Last September he broke Scotland’s North Coast 500 cycling world record just months after suffering horrific injuries while riding across the USA, which consisted of operations on a broken heel and ankle as well as a stent fitted in an artery in his neck, which feeds blood to his brain.

There were no cars involved in the latest accident with Quigley coming off his bike hard whilst descending down a hill at about 40mph. On his social media platforms Quigley says “Not able to walk and have any independent mobility and in a lot of pain.” and informs “Not sure what the recovery process is looking like yet. But I’m having surgery tomorrow and then have 2 weeks of bed rest in hospital as can’t walk or move really due to back fractures and can only use my right hand / side .”
In breaking Scotland’s North Coast 500 cycling world record Quigley shaved six minutes off the existing North Coast 500 world record when he completed the 516-mile Highland route in 31hrs and 17 minutes last September.
The route is ranked as one of the world’s toughest endurance challenges as it has 34,423ft (10,492) of ascent – more than Mount Everest, which stands at 29,029ft (8848m).
