Power Couple World Championship Bound

Britain’s triathlon power couple are heading to Canada in little over two weeks after being selected to compete in the Under 23 World Championships.

Sophia Green and Cameron Main, who both study and train at the University of Stirling under lead performance triathlon coach Andrew Woodroffe, have both had an incredibly successful year on the ETU cup circuit which has led to their selection to race some of the finest Under 23 athletes in the world.

Both athletes recently toured Europe in pursuit of Commonwealth Games qualification, hopefully bringing them to compete in Birmingham next year. As each other’s biggest supporters, the power couple are no strangers to success, with both Cameron and Sophia each having spent their fair share of time on the podium.

Reflecting on their journey over the last year, Andrew Woodroffe says “I remember having a long conversation with Cameron and Sophia in lockdown around how 2021 might look and what they wanted to achieve and how. The long-term goal was always Birmingham next year but qualifying for both Europeans and Worlds this year was a real target. As a coach you sit down, outline the work and process needed to get there but really it is both of them that make it happen. I’ve spoken before about this but we always decided to chase opportunities, take what came our way and go all in. Both athletes did this early in the season and in their frantic European trip stepped up to the level required.”

“Sophia now has plenty of GB squad and championship experience and has earned her spot on every team. The goal for us now is to step that level up, start to be right in the mix and go after the race. It will be her first Olympic so some training is adapted towards this but ultimately the process and structure stays similar. The commitment and drive in training these last few weeks truly has been inspiring.

“For Cameron it’s another chance to race right up there and wear that Great Britain (GB) vest. Europeans wasn’t what we were after and he has much more to give and deliver as an athlete. Cam is an incredible teammate and I believe being in a wider team and with some of the best around him we will see him rise to the challenge.

“Edmonton is quite special for myself, it’s the first place I ever raced (age group) Worlds so to have two athletes heading there to race on the World stage is brilliant. They will be ready when the time comes.”

Sophia Green continued this sentiment, saying, “I’m really excited to travel to Canada and the World championships. After racing Juniors in 2019 I wasn’t sure I’d qualify for a major championship for at least a few years considering the strength of GB! I’m really looking forward to enjoying this experience and delivering a performance I can be proud of and that represents my hard work and development.”

Cameron Main echoes Sophia’s thoughts saying, “This is my first ever World Championships and first ITU race outside of Europe. To race World champs is something I have worked towards for the last 4 years as a junior and under 23. I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to race at another major champs after not quite performing at Europeans this year.”

“When I started triathlon back in 2012, I would’ve never thought I would be on the start line of a World Championships, but I’m now looking forward to going there and putting in a performance I’ll be proud of in the future.

“To know some of the athletes that have won medals and what they have gone through in their career in terms of setbacks remind me that sport has many lows and it’s how you work through those to become a champion.”

Despite their recent success and commitment to the sport both Cameron and Sophia lack any major sponsors. Cameron notes, “If you’re not at the top then you are always struggling to just compete at races due to the cost of kit and travel. The support of any sponsors big or small would take this stress and uncertainty away. If anyone does wish to get in touch with Sophia or myself our social media are below.”

We will be following both athletes closely in their journey to Canada and beyond!
