Never Underestimate the Power of Triathlon
Never underestimate the power of triathlon in a rehabilitation process as witnessed when more than 40 personnel from the Royal Marines and Royal Navy took part in the 2021 Hasler Rehab Triathlon, held at HMNB Devonport in Plymouth.
The Rehab Triathlon attracted personnel and teams from 45 Commando based in Scotland, Stonehouse’s 30 Commando, The Army’s Royal Citadel 29 Commando from Plymouth, HMS Drakes’ Personnel Recovery Group and in house RNRC Hasler as well.
Most injured military personnel are nursed and supported back to full fitness while still serving with their units, but more serious cases require longer term treatment and care away from their units and ships so they can concentrate solely on rehabilitation
Hasler Naval Service Recovery Centre, set up in September 2009 principally to help commandos permanently scarred by battle recover from their wounds – or re-adjust their lives – now helps men and women from across the Forces with long-term conditions, injuries and illnesses.
The video below will give you an insight into the power of triathlon in the rehabilitation process.
The triathlon event included swimming, adaptive cycling and rowing and has two routes to choose from depending on individual abilities. The rehab triathlon is for men and women who are undertaking rehabilitation or who have been wounded injured or medically discharged.
The commanding Officer of RNRC Hasler, Major Steve Cox Royal Marines said “It means so much to so many people. It represents a goal in their individual pathways to recovery and competing with others brings so much joy, you only have to look around and see the enthusiasm, dedication and effort, from instructors and competitors alike.”
Thursday 23 June 2022 will see the staging of a much bigger triathlon event on Plymouth Hoe as part of Armed Forces Week, where teams featuring personnel from the Royal Navy, Army, Royal Air Force as well as teams from the USA and the Netherlands Marine Corps, will compete.
Support for the event has been continually provided by The Royal Marines Charity and Help for Heroes Sports Recovery Programme and donations are always welcomed.
