Koch notches up maiden win in Huatulco WTCS Mexico
In a field stacked with experience and possible podium contenders it was Germany’s Annika Koch who produced a superb display to notch up her maiden World Triathlon Cup gold medal in Huatulco, Mexico.
Old and new faces lined up in the challenging humid and hot heat of Santa Cruz Bay ready to prove themselves and attain those vital Paris 2024 points as part of the crucial Olympic qualification campaign.
The sprint course consisted of a one-lap, 750m swim in the bay of Santa Cruz, leading into a four-lap, 20km bike course that traverses the town of Huatulco with two long, straight sections with tight, technical turns at the end. The two-lap run finished in Santa Cruz Plaza.
Koch produced an outstanding race sharing the podium with Canada’s Emy Legault, who took second, and Italy’s Bianca Seregni, who took third. Although Italy’s Bianca Seregni exited the swim and lead a group of riders from the front it was not enough as the chasing pack caught up half-way round the bike section.
Into the 5k run it was Koch who brushed off the humidity to outrun her competitors comfortably crossing the winning line some 10 seconds ahead of Legault.
