It’s Official: Alex Yee Selected for the Tokyo Olympics
Alex Yee will make his Olympic debut in Tokyo after being selected by the British Triathlon Olympic Selection Committee for the one spot left up for grabs in Team GB Men’s Squad.
The selectors’ role through this seasons WTCS Olympic qualifying races has been to tease out the rightful Olympian from the current crop of high-level men based on athletes results and performance training data. There could have been little room for doubt that Yee was the athlete ready to step up to the plate for GB to secure an Olympic podium, particularly as Yee is only one of two Brits (Jonny Brownlee, the other) who are in the top 30 Olympic rankings.
Following Alex terrific ‘s performance in the sweltering heat of Yokohama WTCS race where he took 4th place all eyes were on the penultimate Olympic qualifying WTCS race in Leeds. This was a race that gave top-billing to the Brownlee brothers on their home-turf and what was likely their last World Series on British soil.
However, it was Alex Yee who captured the show with a sensational triathlon triumph demolishing the entire field and securing his maiden World Series victory. Alistair Brownlee’s hopes of competing for a third Olympic gold medal in Tokyo this summer came crashing down when he found himself on the wrong side of Triathlon rules at Leeds and was DQ.
“I am delighted,” Alex Yee said upon hearing about his selection,”It’s been a whirlwind since Leeds last weekend and it’s all coming round pretty quickly. I’m going to get my head down for the next few weeks and prepare as best I can.”
Team GB Chef de Mission for the Tokyo Olympic Games, Mark England, commented: “Alex has been so exciting to watch in recent months and his terrific performance at the Leeds Triathlon cemented his place on the team, which is fully deserved.
Yee will now join the GB Olympic squad of team-mate Jonny Brownlee together with women’s team of Vicky Holland, Jess Learmonth and Georgia Taylor-Brown
