IRONMAN 70.3 (Nice) One Nicola
‘Anything is possible‘ IRONMAN claim – that is only if ‘Superfrau’ Nicola Spirig is not racing. Once again, the ‘Legend’ crushed all opposition as she dominated from the get-go to win IRONMAN 70.3 Nice in France on Sunday 12 September.
It was the women from Switzerland Nicola Spirig who ruled the roost at IRONMAN 70.3 Nice with a commanding performance from the starting horn just a month after the Gold and Silver Medal Olympian completed her fifth Olympic Games in Tokyo having also been crowned in June this year ETU Middle Distance Champion (Challenge Wlachsee) in Austria.
Legends of Triathlon: Nicola Spirig – Making the impossible possible!
Spirig consistently puts in ageless performances and is showing no signs of slowing down as she lined up in Nice for a beach start to embark on a one loop, 1.9 km swim in the pristine waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Spirig exited the water 1st with a 22 second over Britain’s India Lee and still counting time on the other swimmers to exit.
Out of T1 and onto the bike leg of a 90 km bike course, the jewel in the crown, of this IRONMAN course as it passes through the French villages and mountains with its beautiful panoramic views. And here Spirig powered away to the second fastest bike split. With Spirig renown for her prowess in running it was unlikely that the chasing group were going to get close to her with lead she had built.
And so, it proved as Spirig exited T2 onto the flat and fast two –loop 21km run course along the Promenade des Anglais running the leg section in 01:19;07 with an overall time of 04:36:54. Taking home silver was Germany’s Lena Berlinger (+3:26) and Britain’s India Lee (+4:23), who ran through to take third place with the best run time of the day in a time of 01:18:11.
‘Anything is Possible’ is a true statement in the case of Nicola Spirig as she once again defies the law of physics and makes the impossible possible.
