Grau de felicidade on inaugural World Cup Gold in Huatulco Mexico
There’s a first time for everything as Spain’s Genis Grau takes an inaugural World Cup gold in Huatulco, Mexico in a winning time of 00:53:47
Grau was joined on the World Cup podium by last year’s winner Canadian Tyler Mislawchuk who was attempting to make it three golds in a row at this event. While the Brazilian Miguel Hidalgo put in a dynamite display to take bronze,
Hidalgo and Slovakia’s Richard Varga exiting the water first did nothing to break the race up into packs as the chasing pack caught up with the front pack leaving nearly all the athletes to descend upon T2 as if charging into the Battle of Puebla.
Just as in the women race earlier this was going to be a 5k run race to the finishing line and with only 10 seconds separating the top 20 athletes they all wasted no time in setting the pace. As the run progressed Grau, Mislawchuk , Hidalgo, David Nunez (ME) and Sergio Baxter Cabrera (ESP) found themselves ahead of their chasing rivals and dictating the pace.
As they saw sight of the blue carpet there was very little between the five of them and it was all down to the sprint finish with Grau able to push that bit harder to reach the winning line a second ahead of Mislawchuk in second with third spot to Hidalgo who held of the pursuing Nunez and Cabrera, the former taking 4th place by a hair’s breadth,
