Garmin Begin Fix After 4-day Havoc for Triathletes
American smartwatch maker Garmin has been fighting a ransomware attack and although some issues have been resolved, users are still continuing to run into problems with the GPS and fitness app.
Users of the products have been unable to use Garmin’s services, such as the Garmin Connect app, since last Thursday (23) which is used to upload activities to other apps such as Strava.
A number of the company’s services resumed back to normal operation as of Monday as the business confirmed the ‘cyber-attack’ for the first time, stating “Affected systems are being restored and we expect to return to normal operation over the next few days.”
It was reported that the malware involved was Wasted Locker – a program that scrambles the target’s data.
Earlier reports from last week claimed that hackers demanded a $10 million ransom from Garmin to allow the files to be decrypted.
Garmin have avoided any reference to the ransom demand, however, sources state that the company is in the final stages of its recovery.
These issues have created havoc amongst the triathlon community.
Going forward, Garmin expects there to be continued delays and issues with syncing and data management as their servers run through backlog transfers. Users affected with syncing problems are best to wait this out until Garmin continue to patch things up and get its systems back to full working order.
