Four GB Women secure place in Montreal World Triathlon Final
Four GB women triathletes safely secured their place in the final of the World Triathlon Championship Series Montreal after they finished in the top 10 in their respective wave qualifier races on Friday.
The GB women in action were:
Non Stanford: Wave 1 Qualifier 3rd
The most recognisable name from Great Britain in the Montreal event, Stanford was the 2013 World Champion and finished fourth at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
Non Stanford speaks openly about her career to the TriNation Podcast Team.
Olivia Mathias: Wave 1 Qualifier 8th
Mathias represented Wales at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and secured silver medals – in the individual and mixed relay – at the 2019 U23 World Championships.
Sophie Coldwell: Wave 2 Qualifier 5th
Coldwell has represented Team England at the Commonwealth Games and achieved several medal-winning performances in World and European Championships.
Sian Rainsley: Wave 2 Qualifier 7th
Rainsley began triathlon at the age of just seven and has won medals at European junior and U23 level, including winning silver at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games.
Other Women Qualifiers:
Thirty athletes will now start tomorrow’s final round, consisting of a total of three super-sprint races in which the slowest ten finishers will be cut after the first and second races, leaving ten triathletes to ultimately battle for gold.
Flora Duffy the Olympic Gold Medalist, nonchalantly went through the gears to take a second in her qualifier as if to save all her energy for the final rounds on Saturday. The USA power trio of Zaferes, Knibb and Spivey all line up in the final as do the German strong duo of Lindemann and Eim who came first and second in their qualifier. You can view the finalist in link below.

Men’s Qualifiers
Using the same qualifying format as the women the men’s first qualifier wave was won by Japan’s Takumi Hojo and in the second wave by Australia’s Jacob Birtwhistle. But you cannot use these wins as a measuring stick to how the final will pan out. There were plenty of household names who qualified whilst preserving energy for Saturdays cruelling three super sprint races.
Other men qualifiers all in the mix include
Olympic Bronze Medalist Kiwi Hayden Wilde is there as is the French Quartet of World Champion Frenchman Vincent Luis, Coninx, Bergere and Tom. Also in the hunt are the Belgian duo of Greens and Van Riel and a host of German triathletes lead by the strength of Schomburg.
TriNation Podcast crew were delighted to talk to 2 x World Champion Vincent Luis
Great Britain’s only hopeful in the men’s triathlon Grant Sheldon did not meet the cut in the first qualifying wave nor in the subsequent repechage.
