Cancelled Edmonton World Triathlon Series Championships Finale to Return in 2021
The grand final of the WTS Series was supposed to have taken place over the weekend in Edmonton, however, along with almost every other WTS race this season, it was totally abandoned.
Last week the organising committee of the event where able to state that next years grand final (2021) for the world championships would now be held in Edmonton. This did not go without hassle as contracts for Bermuda and Abu Dhabi, UAE, had to be rewritten as they had already been awarded the 2021 and 2022 events.
World Triathlon general manager Stephen Bordeau said on the event “We had an expected 3,500 age group athletes coming to Edmonton, plus coaches and family members, bringing the total number of visitors to more than 6,500. Indications before this happened were that the U.S. team included about 900 people,”
“We are excited to announce we’ll be returning one year from now with the same expectations.”
The event had raised a budget of $13 million to cover total cost and that money will be forwarded to next years dates Aug. 17-22.
Although this seems like a heavy investment, the projected economic impact to come out of this event was $35 million and it will be broadcasted across 160 nations.
