Beth Potter wins World Triathlon Championship Series in Montreal
Great Britain’s Beth Potter claimed her second win of the 2023 World Triathlon Championship Series after a strong run saw her triumph in Montreal.
The Scot, 31, punched the air in delight as she crossed the finish line in 58 minutes 10 seconds to add to her victory in Abu Dhabi in March.
She finished two seconds ahead of France’s Leonie Periault, with Summer Rappaport of the US third. Britain’s Georgia Taylor-Brown was 35 seconds behind Potter in seventh.
Prior to the race three British women’s have won all the 2023 Series races so far this season, but until now have not all raced at the same time, namely: Potter (Abu Dhabi winner), Coldwell (Yokohama) and Taylor-Brown (Cagliari).
It very much looked like the USA were going to spoil the Brit winning party of a fourth victory in a row in Monteral when the the American duo of Taylor Knibb and Summer Rappaport smashed the bike leg coming into T2 with a 13 second lead.
The chasing group included Potter, Coldwell and Taylor-Brown. But Potter’s style was so easy, every pace seemed to propel her forwards, but Periault and Rappaport dug deep to keep the Brit honest and in their sights. But as they entered the final lap it was the run power of Potter that settled the score and with a 16.08 – 5k, she smiled all the way down the blue carpet to take the victory and gold.
The overall world champion is decided by an athlete’s best four results during the season, plus the championship finals.
Beth spoke to TriNation in 2021 about making the switch from pro running to pro triathlon and how it’s taken four years to fully make the transition. She also shared details on her plans to reach the Paris Olympics in 2024. You can listen to the Podcast below:
