Jodie Stimpson is set to Escape from Alcatraz
Jodie Stimpson is set to Escape from Alcatraz in one of the most gruelling races to swim-bike-run.
After such a successful short-distance career Jodie is now taking the step to branch out into middle distance racing with her first race for the 2022 season being the famed Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon in San Francisco.
Jodie is renowned as one of Great Britain’s most successful short-course athletes over the past decade becoming a two times gold medallist at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and a four times World Triathlon Series winner.
She tested the water of middle-distance racing back 2019 coming second in Ironman 70.3 Bahrain and again last year when she took impressive win at Challenge Miami 2021 to beat an in-form Lucy Charles-Barclay.
Be under no illusion that Jodie is doing this for fun, she is a competitor, a winner of the highest order and while she will have set herself no specific target, she will defiantly have one eye on the 70.3 World’s.
There will be stern competition for Jodie with Jackie Hering (USA) returning for her third Escape, in her attempt to move up the podium after placing third in last year’s race. A five-time 70.3 Champion Hering, recently took first place in the IRONMAN 70.3 Chattanooga, first place in the 2022 Clash Daytona and second place in the 2021 IRONMAN 70.3 Memphis.
Also in the line-up is GB’s Holly Lawrence. Holly has 17 Ironman 70.3 wins to her name and took the win from Jodie in the 2019 Ironman 70.3 Bahrain race.
No-one can take this race for granted as this can be an unforgiving course but Jodie is a true blooded endurance triathlete and she will love every minute of this challenge.
As for the race itself, well, throughout the 40+ year history of Escape from Alcatraz, professional triathletes have been an integral part of the race’s success – setting the bar high with race records and inspirational performances. Olympians, tenured legends, young phenoms on the rise – the pro field has long been one-to-watch at this event.
The beauty of the tri-community is that on June 5, 2022, the pros will join 2,000 amateur triathletes on the good ship Hornblower, and lead the charge every step of the way. From the jump off the boat to breaking the tape at the finish line, the energy they bring to the course is contagious.
The Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon includes a 1.5-mile swim from Alcatraz Island in the San Francisco Bay. The race continues with an 18-mile bike ride out the Great Highway, through the Golden Gate Park, and concludes with an 8-mile run through the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The finish is at The Marina Green.
