World Triathlon 2022 Season – Let the first races commence!
Whilst not out the woods yet, all the signals are the world pandemic will soon be behind us, which bodes well for the first races of the 2022 World Triathlon season.
The Board of World Triathlon has approved the first events for the 2022 World Triathlon Championship Series calendar. Of the seven regular WTCS races, five are scheduled for the new season (two having already been held in 2021) before the Grand Final in Abu Dhabi.
2022 will see two World Triathlon Championships awarding the sport’s most prestigious prizes, with Abu Dhabi crowning the World Triathlon and Para Triathlon Champions, while the Montreal weekend will see the Sprint and Relay World titles awarded.
The Leeds Triathlon at Roundhay Park will be in the British City for the six time and a great setting to parade GB’s Olympic Triathlon Gold Medalists. This event is part of British Triathlon’s new three-year strategy which also includes for the first time the 2022 World Triathlon Para Series in Swansea on 6 August.
Two new event locations in the calendar are the Chinese city of Chengdu who step up to host an Olympic-distance World Triathlon Championship Series event in October and a inaugural stop in Bergen, Norway – home of Nordic Olympian Kristian Blummenfelt – for a World Triathlon Cup event
The 2022 calendar will also include major events like the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham (UK) on 30-31 July, while Munich will host the European Championships on August 13-14. Hangzhou (China) will host the 2022 Asian Games in September, and Birmingham (USA) the World Games in July.
The 2022 calendar has not been finalised with more events to be announced in the coming weeks. Here are the dates already confirmed:
