Germany’s Jule Behrens becomes 2021 World Triathlon Junior Champion
Jule Behrens of Germany is the 2021 World Triathlon Junior Champion winning the Sprint Championship race in Quarteria, Portugal this Sunday Nov 7th.
The German ran all the way to the winning tape and Gold after an eventful bike segment in Quarteira in a time of 1:01:01, eight seconds ahead of the Swede Tilda Mansson who took the silver and an a further 16 seconds ahead of Spaniard Maria Casals Mojica who took bronze.
This has been a wonderful year of racing for the German starlet who back in June became two-time Junior European Champion winning both the individual and mixed relay races in Kitzbühel, Austria.
The Junior Championship race in Quarteria, was almost a carbon copy of the men’s race yesterday – strong swimmers and even stronger runners to the front with an eventful bike section in-between.
Another beach start in glorious Algarve sunshine and exiting the Mediterranean waters first was Frenchwomen Candice Denizot followed closely by a group of six who made a gap of 10 seconds to the next swimmer to exit with the German Behrens finding herself some 40 seconds back.
In the bike leg and the lead front pack did not make the most of their advantage as the chasing pack hauled them back in in lap two making a 26 strong pack that ebbed and flowed into T2.
Like yesterday, it was going to be down to a runner’s race and again the podium spots went to the athletes who had the fastest 5k splits of the day. Although the Swede Masson was 3 seconds quicker on the run than Behrens there was not enough road left to make up the remaining 10 second deficit as the German took the winning tape.
