Csongor Lehmann hungry for Gold winning the U23 World Triathlon Championships Edmonton
The badge of honour for rising talent went to Hungarian Csongor Lehmann winning Gold and the U23 World Triathlon Championships title as he ran through the blue carpet to winning tape finish at Haerealk Park in Edmonton, Canada.
Running behind to podium positions were Tim Hellwig (GER) to earn silver and Matthew Hauser (AUS) taking home bronze.
To end the Edmonton World Championship events the final race of the day the Mens U23 championship with a field stacked with where the best rising triathlon male talents from around the globe.
As they line up for the 1.5k swim the horn sounds. An array swim caps thrash their way towards the first buoy, determined to escape the chaos and find clear water. Diego Moya (CHI) sets a relentless pace and was first to exit the water with the next ten swimmer less than 8 seconds behind and on his toes.
Quickly onto their bikes and out of T1 onto the 40K bike ride a pack formed of 10 riders powered by the likes of Chase McQueen (USA) Matthew Hauser (AUS), Leon Pauger (AUT), Csongor Lehmann (HUN) and Miguel Hidalgo (BRA) all riding aggressively with the U23 world title on the line.
By the half-way stage, the leaders were working well together and pushing the pace while the second pack of 5 chasing, in the shape of Zsombor Dévay (HUN), Kyotaro Yoshikawa (JPN), Simon Henseleit (GER), Tyler Smith (BER) and Sasha Caterina (SUI) were 26-seconds down on the leaders.
With one lap to go the lead group had put time into the chase group of 5 men who were riding close to 1-minute down and that how it remained as the entered and exited T1.
With some really strong runners in the mix of this U23 men’s field it was going to be an interesting 10km run. Matthew Hauser (AUS) led the men out onto the run with a group of runners behind hunting him down with Diego Moya (CHI) and Csongor Lehmann (HUN) on the pursuit.
At the 5k mark Matt Hauser looked over his shoulder to sight Csongor Lehmann (HUN) and Tim Hellwig (GER) on the chase. With 5km to go the battle for the podium was on, as the trio laid down the pace.
Into the final kilometre of the race and there was nothing to separate the front three then another former Junior Champion Hungarian Lahmann slipped streamed pass Huaser to take the lead as did the German Hellwig to go second with Hauser now finding himself in third spot. And that’s how the positions remained as Lahmann crossed the line in a time of 1:46:47 to win the Men’s U23 World title.
Closely behind were Hellwig (1:46:51) to earn the silver while Hauser (1:46:55) would take home the bronze

The new GB debutants on the world stage Conner Bentley and Cameron Main were not able to get themselves into contention for a podium finish but held strong on the run to finish 18th and 23rd respectively.
