Knibb crushes field to win World Triathlon Final as Duffy crowned Olympic and World Triathlon Champion in same year
Taylor Knibb showed her power on the bike by crushing the field with a solo ride lead of 2 minutes 45 seconds enabling her to stay out in front on the run to win the World Triathlon Grand Final in Edmonton. Olympic Champion Floria Duffy took Bronze to earn the Crown of being first-ever Olympic and World Triathlon Champion in same year.
Having lead the swim and exiting T2 on a draft-legal road bike she used in Tokyo, Knibb showed just how powerful she is on the bike, with an astonishing solo ride building up a time gap that was insurmountable as she hit the 10K run and crossed the finishing line to take Gold in a time of 01:54:47.
Leonie Periault (FRA) was having an outstanding race to stick with Olympic Triathlon Champion Flora Duffy, running for silver and bronze in the WTCS podium with the Frenchwomen Periault finishing the strongest to come in 2nd to earn silver and Duffy taking 3rd and earn the points to win her third World Title.
Little could Bermuda’s hero Flora Duffy have imagined that the summer of 2021 would be the most special of her career making history as the first triathlete to be crowned first-ever Olympic and World Triathlon Champion in same year.
Three weeks after becoming the Olympic champion, the Bermudian has again already been showing magnificent form, claiming her first WTCS victory since 2018 in Montreal and landing in Edmonton with a comfortable lead on the Maurice Lacroix World Triathlon Championship Series Ranking. With a circuit that looks like designed for her – tough bike, flat run – bar a disaster nothing could prevent the Bermudian claiming a record-equalling third women’s world title and becoming the first triathlete in history to win Olympic gold and the World Championships in the same year.
The British contingent all put in sterling performances.
