Sophia Green finishes sixth in 2021 European Triathlon Cup Olsztyn (Poland)
British and Scottish triathlete Sophia Green put in a sterling performance in the elite women’s European Triathlon Cup held in Olsztyn, Poland on Saturday 29 May and will be delighted to have finished in sixth place after such a long spell without competitive international racing.
It was back in 2019 when Sophia raced at the World Junior Championships and is a front runner to secure qualification for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games for Team Scotland as she begins what is a crucial 2021 season and this race together with her bronze at the Sospan Sprint Triathlon Llanelli – sharing the podium with Olivia Mathias and Olympic bronze medalist Vicky Holland- will put her in good stead.
Sophia was not the only British name to grace the women’s start list in Poland as she was joined by fellow Scot, Iona Miller. Again, due to the break in competitive racing you have to go back to 2019 when Iona finished in 6th place at the GBR Sprint Triathlon National Championships. She did not disappoint upon her return taking a top ten spot with a convincing performance amongst the top women triathletes across Europe, crossing the line in 10th place.

Of the five British athletes lining up for the men’s race Jack Willis was the first British name on the start list. Willis has raced in the European Triathlon Cup already this year, traveling with Christopher Perham who was also starting in Olsztyn for his second Europe Triathlon Cup start of the year. They were joined on the start list by Harry Leleu for the first time since 2019. He was part of the relay team that took gold at Valencia ETU Triathlon U23 European Championships and finished in 12thplace in the individual race over that weekend. Cameron Main and Oliver Turner made up the British contingent Main finished 3rdat the recent Sospan Sprint Triathlon Llanelli as well as the GBR Sprint Triathlon National Championships back in 2019 where he was closely followed by his compatriot, Oliver Turner in 4th place.
The men were not to be outdone by the women with Jack Willis going one place higher than Sophie Green and taking a truly magnificent 5th place with only 7 seconds between him and the winner, Norwegian Vetle Bergsvik Thorn. Harry Leleu showed his development is on track to grace the world triathlon circuit with a solid performance to make up the 4th British top 10 spot of the day by running through the finish line in 7th place.
Cameron Main still a rookie on the international stage showed why he is a contender for qualification for Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games for Team Scotland as he pushed the boundaries to cross the line in a terrific 12th place. Chris Perham (26th) and Oliver Turner (27th) will take away learning experience from competing in a very large field of 75 top European athletes.
