Super League Triathlon schedules new major cities for 2021 Championship Series
Super League Triathlon schedules three new major cities for 2021 Championship Series including a return to Jersey. The four events will take place on back-to-back weekends during the month of September.
Super League Triathlon’s 2021 Championship Series race calendar is:
- September 5: London, UK
- September 12: Munich, Germany
- September 18: Jersey, Channel Islands
- September 25: Malibu, USA
The London event will be held in the West India Quay area of the city, while the Munich race will be staged around the Olympia Park complex and for the fourth time St Helier will stage the Jersey race. The series will climax with the championship final in the beach city of Malibu, Stateside.
Reigning Super League champions Vincent Luis and Katie Zaferes will defend their Championship Series crowns, with other international competitors who have qualified or going to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. Nevertheless, there will be athletes who won’t be going to the Games who could well disrupt the established stars. Athletes like Sophie Coldwell, Beth Potter or Alex Yee, who are Olympic worthy but may not go, have the chance to really shake things up.
ATHLETES:
Women: Katie Zaferes, Georgia Taylor-Brown, Jessica Learmonth, Cassandre Beaugrand, Beth Potter, Sophie Coldwell, Taylor Spivey, Rachel Klamer, Vicky Holland, Emma Jeffcoat, Yuko Takahashi, Leonie Periault, Anna Godoy, Maya Kingma, Ilaria Zane, Valerie Barthelemy.
Men: Vincent Luis, Jonathan Brownlee, Henri Schoeman, Hayden Wilde, Kristian Blummenfelt, Alex Yee, Marten Van Riel, Vasco Vilaca, Gustav Iden, Jelle Geens, Justus Nieschlag, Jonas Schomburg, Richard Murray, Tyler Mislawchuk, Leo Bergere, Matthew Hauser.
As well as contracted athletes, events will include a small allocation of wildcard slots, which will be filled nearer the time.
Once the Olympics are out of the way this month of back-to-back Super League racing will poses a lot of difficulty for many of these athletes before they resume the World Triathlon Series in Bermuda in October. Many will be at peak performance for the Olympics so the question will be can they return to competition ensuring they can still peak at the right time to maximize performance?
After a major activity like the Olympics athletes need rest and recuperation in order to effectively repeat that level of activity. These back-to-back events during the month of September allow no period for recovery, it will be race, pack your bike, fly, and race again. No time to refuel and rehydrate the muscles, much will depend on the athlete’s biochemical individuality, age, fitness level, nutrition etc.
