Training Tips: How Triathletes Can Maintain Their Fitness Through Winter
The season is officially finished. NOW WHAT? it’s into the off-season! Take this as an opportunity to mix it up and keep things interesting. This way you will be able to keep motivated throughout the winter and maintain or even better your fitness.
TAKE TIME OFF FOR POST-SEASON RECOVERY:
Make sure you take some recovery time. This is just as important to your training as the physical side of the sport, believe it or not. Once you’ve had a short time off, start looking at routine. Just look at gradually getting back into training for the first month, then you can really think about ramping things up. A good way to do this is to have a program from a coach to provide you with experienced guidance.
CHANGE UP BIKING AND RUNNING ROUTES AND ACTIVITIES TO STAY MOTIVATED:
Try out different sides of each sport. On the diverse side for cycling you have, cyclo-cross and you have mountain biking which can make a great alternative. For running, you have cross country. This can be great fun and getting muddy with all your friends is always a bonus. You can also look at different rates for running and cycling to give yourself some different views.
BUILD YOUR STRENGTH AND WORK ON YOUR TECHNIQUE:
You can easily build on your strength through the winter by putting in some hard graft in the gym. You don’t need to be lifting any heavy weights, some regular S&C work will do the trick. Also take this time to look in depth into ways in which you can improve your technique. Even the top world class athletes are always looking for the finer details in their technique and the start of the winter is the time that they look into that detail.
