Bermuda to hold the 2021 World Triathlon Sprint and Relay Championships
The World Triathlon Board have confirmed that the World Triathlon Sprint & Relay Championships will be held in Bermuda next October 15–17, 2021. The announcement follows a decision by World Triathlon to split its traditional Grand Final programme for 2021, with Bermuda hosting the first ever edition of the Sprint & Relay World Championships. Edmonton, Canada will host the World Championship Finals in August 2021, while the 2021 Para triathlon World Championships will be hosted prior to the Paralympic Games, in Milan (Italy).
Bermuda’s Commonwealth Games champion Flora Duffy is expected to be among the star attractions.
The Sprint & Relay Championships will be a three-day, multiple-event programme and will include the Super-Sprint racing for the Elite World Championships, Junior World Championships, Age-Group Sprint World Championships and the Mixed Relay World Champs – the mixed relay format having been added to next year’s Olympic Games programme.
Bermuda have already held international triathlon events hosting the 2018 and 2019 World Triathlon Series races. The event to be staged in the City of Hamilton will see competitors swim in the crystal-clear Atlantic waters of Hamilton Harbour, cycle the fast city street circuit including the short – but legendary – Corkscrew Hill and run along picturesque Front Street with its colourful buildings.
The 2021 Sprint & Relay Championships are expected to attract an estimated 4,000 competitors from all around the world, support teams, officials, family and friends from Bermuda and overseas. Hazel Clark, BTA Director of Sports Business Development said “We are excited to be able to announce these World Championships, which will help put a spotlight on our destination, highlight our sports capabilities, and significantly contribute to the Bermuda economy,”
