Top 5 Women’s Triathlon Tips
At times triathlon can come across as a male dominated sport and it can be hard for a women to find their place, especially if they are just starting out. Here are 5 of the most valuable tips for females in triathlon from GB Junior World Championship triathlete Sophia Green.
Tip 1 – Find yourself a training group where you feel comfortable amongst everyone at all times. This is so important because your training group should aid your training. Not distract or distrust you. Your training group can play a large role in your development through Triathlon and if you are feeling uncomfortable about attending training this could potentially lead to having a negative affect on your training and therefore, performance. If there is anything that is bothering you speak to someone, I think use athletes can be guilty of that.
Tip 2 – With Triathlon training groups usually being male dominant it is important to socialise out with your normal training group at times. Personally, I find this helps to mix up training and its always nice having some social time where you can just to catch up. Having a group of people around you, sharing the same common goals can help to keep you motivated and this is why finding the right group for you is so important.
Tip 3 – Learn and track your mensural cycle. This is important at all ages and stages in sport and should be talked about more often because it can and does affect many women when training. Monitoring your cycle can help you adapt your sessions if needed and allows you to understand why some sessions the days leading into it perhaps are not going as well as you had hoped. There are so many different apps out there that can help you track this as well as asking people around you, it is important to be able to communicate this to the people that support you through training. If you don’t complete your session then they know why and can adapt from there.
Tip 4 – Nutrition plays a large role in sport and as a female athlete I do believe there is more pressure around this. It’s important to be confident in yourself and feel that you have energy to train. It’s difficult to ignore what others are doing around you, of course you can learn from these people, however, it is important you concentrate on yourself and don’t let anyone’s opinions affect you and your training. Treat yourself every so often, take that café stop!
Tip 5 – Clothing is an important factor in both training and more importantly racing, you must feel comfortable. It can be difficult to find a brand of tri suit that meets the needs for your shape, it is defiantly worth taking time and asking other athletes around you for advice in this area. The same applies with sports bras if you race with one. Some will expand due to the water in the swim and therefor, may not offer enough support and then others may rub with saltwater, especially in longer distance races. This is why it is defiantly worth testing out what works best for you in training because after putting in all the hard work you don’t want clothing to be the thing to bring your performance down.
